SHARJAH — The supreme organising committee of Sharjah Water Festival 2007 yesterday announced that all flags will fly at half mast and the festive activites of the SWF have been cancelled due to state mourning in Sharjah following the death of Shaikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, elder brother of His Highness Dr. Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.
However, the final round of Formula 1 World Powerboat Championship will take place on Friday as per schedule because it is an international event.
The six-day Sharjah Water Festival organised by Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) was scheduled to open today.
The festival was announced at a Press conference last week, where the SCTDA’s chairman, Shaikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi spoke about the importance of hosting international events as the Formula 1 World Powerboat Championship to enhance Sharjah’s international image.
The event is a world-class competition, which will be telecast live to 750 million spectators in more than 150 countries.
